About & Contact
Louisa Trotter is a landscape oil painter who lives with her family in the Scottish Borders. She studied briefly at Central St Martins in London before moving to be trained in portraiture in Florence, Italy at the Charles Cecil studios.
Coming from a traditional training she collided with a Monet book shortly after having her first child. That deeply altered her recognition of the relationship that she had previously had with nature, light and the colours of the seasons. This light switch drives a minor obsession with the changing patterns of the year and she is dedicated to the simple rule that most work has to be painted in the open air without relying on photographic aids.
The character of the landscape has the chance to develop and deepen because of this and will often illuminate subtleties that aren’t obvious at first glance. Those characteristics that come and go throughout the year are the worn familiar fabric of our lives. The British weather and unreliable seasons can be unpredictable foes and this way of painting requires patience. As a result some of the works can take a few years to complete.
